    Default Wolstanton St Margaret's

The church was re-modelled in the 1850s and that's probably when these gargoyles/heads date from.

Gosh..what a wonderful thread Berenice I absolutely love the figure heads and gargoyles that are found looking down on us from their perches. A wonderful collection you've found there. It's almost like some mad leader has had his foes beheaded and their heads stuck on poles as a reminder to all those that would wrong him in the future. (Wasn't some or other chap accredited to doing so and then drinking and bathing in their blood in Transylvania, believed by some, to be the source of the vampire legend).

Perhaps there's even a hint of a warning to all that stray, associated with religious heads/gargoyles too?..dunno, all i know is i find them fascinating. (I have a few stone gargoyles of varying sizes packed away in a box somewhere, must look them up. The ex said they were creepy so they got put away..strange girl lol).

Nice shots BereniceUK! I like the cat carving myself!

Hey icey...you on about Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) and the inspiration behind Bram Stokers book 'Dracula'? And I must confess to having some gargoyles 'about the place' too!

That's him..not sure how much is true or fiction but it pricked my (some would say morbid) strange imagination/interest

And I must confess to having some gargoyles 'about the place' too!
