    Default Explorer 7 & 8 crisis!

Owing to the necessary periodic updates on Windows I find I cant get beyond Internet Explorer 6 which I'm stuck with at the moment.

Whenever I try to update I get warning that "SHRGetValueW" at SHLLAPI.dll cannot be located in the Dynamic Link Library. I'm on Windows XP Home if that makes a difference-2003 version.

I've tried doing a product recovery with the discs provided when bought new but it still happens. Also doing a re-build with the original discs no better either.

I'm on Orange Broadband but I can't dial out on my BT landline also, but people can leave messages on my ansaphone which I can't pick up.

    Is this a disaster, anyone?

Your operating system (and presumably) laptop/ pc is at least 8 years old and now obsolete (or pretty much so at any rate) its dead, let it go and move on.. you could buy something far better now for around three hundred quid, if not less

I had a similar experience with my pc.... ie - stuck with an old version of IE using an old version of Windows XP. My machine was purchased in 2001, making it 10 years old now. So earlier this year, I re-built it and installed a new version of XP (Black Edition) I was then able to upgrade to IE8/9. It now runs very speedily indeed and is well-up for what I use it for. I will be buying a new PC in the new year, probably based around an i7 processor.... but for now, my PC is fine and by re-building it (ie reformatting the HD) I've managed to get another year out of the old dog!

Many thanks for that idea Fisha. I will give it a whirl asap. At what stage did the XP Black go in, after the partition and after the standard re-build discs or in any order?

Do I presume from its exclusive name this is only available on a download, or will my local computer shop be able to give me a competitive offer?

    G'day Richie,
As yamahapaul said, your operating system is, well..... dead! It is time to move on however, I'm curious as to why you would want to use MS Explorer, has to be the worst browser ever - some options to consider would either be Google Chrome or better still Firefox, use Google gmail for your email service (free) and Open Office.org for your documents (free) - although Google offer this for free as well, but you will need a new laptop first with up to date software - love to hear your feedback.
    Kindest regards
    David
