Thread: Highcroft hospital, Erdington, Birmingham

Had an hour free this afternoon so took a trip to the old Highcroft Hospital.
It is extrememly modernised as said before but if you imagine this place 40 years ago with steel bars at the windows etc etc.
Some of the old buildings still stand in the surrounding roads but they are all heavily guarded. I was told to move on as I was taking the pictures of the Jafray building from my car. Would have argued a bit more but intend to go back next week and ask permission to enter.
As I said in a previous post, I went here to visit many years ago and it scared the s**t out of me.....got the heebies just looking at the tower today...strange old place but at least it still stands in all its notorious glory.

Nice pics Hawk when I was nosing around there (which was quite a while ago, to be honest ) there was one building that was boarded up, just down from where you turn off the road and in to where the clock in the middle of, what I can only describe as, a sort of courtyard if you know where I mean?

I've moved this and given it its own thread as I hope this can be expanded on..... hope thats ok?

Paul...I think you refer to the Jafray building which is still boarded up and has a courtyard to the rear. It was used as an NHS mental health assesment unit until fairly recently and as mentioned is quite heavily patrolled (as are the other remaining units). I am hoping to go back later this week to see if I can get permission to at least get into the grounds.

No problem with the thread as I would love to hear other peoples recollections of this place. BTW. My OH is horrified that I want to go back there as she feels that it should never have been built in the first place. too many horror stories as a child.

If you do go and its sunday, give me a shout as I wouldn't mind tagging along....

I work with a lot of Brummies and they all reckon that it housed some 'proper' errrm mental patients and not just the dysfunctional, epileptics, ADHD cases etc that I've referred to elsewhere, that were commited to such places. Word is, when it closed they were just released into society (disclaimer- not my views, merely what I've been told!).... that being said, go to Big Johns in Erdington at night (any time after 10pm)....
