    Default Tankerville Mine, Shropshire

South of Minsterley are the remains of a 19th century mine, also a still inhabited hamlet of the same name - Tankerville. Despite the mine closing in 1884 there are still some structures standing.

Tankerville had the deepest shaft in the Shropshire ore field - 1,612ft below surface - and a steam engine more than 1,000ft below ground

Well worth checking out the Open Day. Not sure when it is, but visited last year and it includes short trips into a couple of the levels- nothing too taxing but certainly interesting.
Opps- wrong mine, was refering to Snailbeach Lead Mine another mine "run" by Shropshire Mines Trust

Snailbeach is only a few miles north of Tankerville and I did think about stopping off there to look at the mine but I had something else on my agenda ;-)

Snailbeach is well worth a visit.
Plenty of interesting buildings spread over quite an area with a "village" hidden within. Not sure how the inhabitants feel when the visitors are wandering about, but its location more than makes up for those days I'm sure.

That's very interesting. I went through the village by bus a couple of days ago and there was no visual evidence that there was a mine there. Maybe if I'd walked through I'd have spotted mine buildings. Another time....

Yes its well hidden, but there are a number of buildings including a Pumping Engine house simlilar to Tankerville, Mines office, blacksmiths shop (which is up & running on open days), winding engine houses, etc.

Had a good wander on last year's open day, but don't think I saw everything- must have a return visit sometime.

It was the windmill at Asterley that I've posted photos of; I'd seen it from the bus and just HAD to go see it
