    Default Etruria Gas Holder, SoT

One of the few remaining gas holders in the City & originally part of the Etruria Gas Works. Plans have been submitted to demolish it and replace it with the usual "light industrial" and "storage & distribution" units

Planning application with some history is at Stoke-On-trent City Council Planning Pages

As if by magic there's a piece in the local paper: A DERELICT site which had been earmarked for housing could now be developed to create new jobs.

Exclamation Re: Etruria Gas Holder, SoT

    Up date

Just checked the planning application & it was refused on 4th May 2011.

Well, permission to erect the industrial units was refused, but is the gas holder safe??

    Reason for refusal:

" The application contains insufficient information to demonstrate that the development would not result in detrimental impact to the amenity of occupiers of nearby residential properties by reason of noise and disturbance. Approval of the proposals would thereore be contrary to advice contained in Policy D2 of the Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Structure Plan 1996-2001 and Planning Policy Guidance Note 24 "Planning & Noise" 1994."

    No appeal as yet!

I actually saw a gas holder in the US last week, very similar in design to those in the UK. Hadn't realised that they had them here too.

    Latest News

Outline Planning Permission for demolition of the gas holder & subsequent industrial development of the site was Granted with conditions on 23/11/2011.

Demolition Determination for the gas holder has been submitted to the Council 10/04/2012. So looks like its the end of this iconic structure

Can only hope that the local residents who bought their new houses next to it and reckon it reduced the value will be pleased with industrial units instead. Well thats bound to add value
