Default Premier Screw & Repitition, Leicester

We had been watching this one for a long time and finally gained access one day last year after a tip off.
Premier Screw & Repetition was founded in 1921 and went bust a few years ago. Some personal interest in this one for me as my mum worked there for a while, and my dad was there for most of his working life. There had been some damage, but overall it was a fantastic place. There were stacks of paperwork, furniture, and computers just left everywhere. There was one room full of old books, on our second visit some dating from 1906 and 1909 were found thrown on the floor. Unfortunately at the end of April 2008 someone set fire to the place. Some parts have been badly damaged and it is now secure again.

I quite agree about the importance of things being preserved but what's the legal situation?

Unhappy Re: Premier Screw & Repitition, Leicester

    Ah! The age old discussion!

I have wrestled with the ethics of this...being a 'papers' lover, it just upsets me that these things are left to get even more damaged...the next person along may not be as sympathetic towards the historical value of the things we see and find as we are. But then, if you remove them from site, no-one else gets to see them 'in-situ'.

Perhaps if you feel the need to remove these things then you should make it very public that you have the papers...perhaps study scan and post them onto a website at your own considered risk...to me, accounts and numbers are fine, but nothing personal about someone, especially that which could hurt that person or their family.

My friend Paul works as an Archivist. I will ask him what the official line is for things donated "in the public interest". He may be able to help me with the legalities too...some things may be covered by various 'Acts' and are 'unpublishable' in any domain for a certain number of years.

    There is no easy answer...
