    Smile Featherstone

Royal Ordnance Factory Featherstone was a WW2 filling factory which made bombs, shells ect.

It was then ROSM (Royal Ordnance Special Metals) Featherstone which made toughened bullets from depleted uranium. It closed back in the late 1980s . Half the site has been bulldozed ready for the construction of a new prison to stand alongside the existing one.

There is loads still standing though and the site is massive. The main production areas have strange machines scattered through them and some of the WW2 stuff is great.

Maybe someone can tell me what the last images with the writing on the wall and numbers mean ?

Nice pics lady! We all have good things to say about this site and will be quite sad when it goes I reckon.

Balfalloy, Cutanit and Novite are grades of metal with additional elements and heat treatments specially for this 'ordnance' industry. I'm guessing that the numbers would have related to some sort of stock location system. I don't think it relates to 'inches' of bar diameter because 5, 7 and 9 are arsy sizes... not generally available.

You've stumbled into the stock room my lovely!

Correct! There was quite a serious fire in 1999(?) stories of depleted uranium etc. But all proved ok said the officials.

yes there was a fire in an area that was still operational, however, it wasn't in any of the places shown in these pics and is now long gone...
