There are or were 3 ranges around the Chase dating from WW1.
With regard to the one in the pics had the priveledge of firing 303's there many moons ago as an army cadet Think the TA's also used it & yes red flags were flown when in use.Had a look around there a couple of years ago & noticed the butts, where the targets were positioned, had been filled in. I can remember we took it in turns to be down there & point up with a long stick with a painted triangle on the end to show where the shots had landed. Then every so often pulled the targets down (they were on a frame & pulley type system) to paper over the holes. Noticed the cadet centre nearby had been extended & looks as if its got electricity- everything including lighting was gas when I were a lad
