    Smile RAF High Ercall, Shropshire

Q- what do you do when you're bored, off work and going stir crazy from being snowed in?

A- search google, find somewhere interesting to go and dig the car out!

Donn't know much about the place but this is what I can gather- it was built around 1939, closed (operationally) in 1965. At some point after that it was split up, the admin, 2 hangers and accomodation section (where I was today) was turned into an industrial estate, some of the businesses there included a BRS transport training school (for HGV mechanics I assume) and the RTITB (responsible for fork-lift truck training and certification and stuff like that).

The runways were reclaimed as farmland.

The remaining hangers are owned by a warehouse/ storage type company.

Around four years ago it was due to become The Angel Centre, basically accomodation rented to the government for asylum seekers... local opposition was so strong this never happened. Currently this side is up for sale.

A company overview of the Angel group can be found here-

    http://www.theangelgroup.com/index2.htm

and details of the sale found here-

    swimming pool

this would've been the admin centre and contain the COs office etc

    accomodation

this building to the left was open

A strange mix of buildings with the later additions dating from the late 70s - 80s I would guess and overall in excellent condition.... I'm going back soon in the next week or two and in the light!

Nice pictures and interesting potted history I don't like the sound of that Angel group much

this site identifies some of the buildings and structures and states that the towers are or at least one of them, is a water tower

Thanks It looks as tho the towers were water towers if the info on stigs link is correct.... didn't do any HDRs as the light wasnn't really suitable and there wasn't anything that would've made a suitable subject, in that light anyway! Now next time maybe....

There's also some excellent pictures of the Angel Centre on Laura, my newest flickr chum's photostream, which can be found here-

I'm loving this. This is a proper pre war 'expansion period' airfield by the look of it.

Not sure if you can discuss access on this forum but can you just drive onto site ?

    From above-

I also came across these on the way and didn't think that they were part of the airfield as they're around three miles away, but it would appear that they were sick quarters or something along those lines, not in very good condition and now used to house farm machinery....
