Always thought this was an impressive building, well before it was a sports shop
Can remember it being a Burton's, any idea what it was originally?
Has the looks of a cinema front to me![]()
Def art deco!
Did it used to be a (small) department store?
Could well have been but not within my (limited) memory.
Certainly distinctive & would love to know what it was originally- sure someone will deliver on this

This is an Art Deco building - built circa 1930, so it must have replaced the hotel that you mentionJust had look on1898 map & its marked as a hotel
It is very similar to many Burtons elsewhere, so burtons were probably the original occupiers.
Yes it is certainly the Montagu Burton house-style, sir.
May i show you the premises in Abergavenny and Whitehaven to compare with?![]()
yes you are absolutly right, they did favour this style. I myself have noticed often that their shops had Art Deco archictecture. They had certainly one shop in the Art Deco style also in Dublin. The building still exists at the corner of St Great Georges Street and Dame Street
My mother worked for Montegue Burton in factories in Atherton and Bolton as seamstress in the 1940's.
Their slogen was "The Tailors Of Taste" but my mother said that the workers said it should have been "The Tailors of Haste" as they were under preassure to produce the garments so fast as possible.
She bought me my first sports jacket and long trousers in a Burtons.
She told me that Burtons always chose a corner location for their shops as a matter of policy.
They were very big in the UK until the late 70's when they became "unfashionable" and suffered from declining sales of formel suits and sports jackets and overcoats due to trends for more less formal casual wear. I think they renamed some of the brand and shops to 'Principles' and maybe 'Next'
