Default The Red Well in Wellingborough

Way back in 1628 the Northamptonshire town of Wellingborough had around 5 infamous wells - one of which is the Red Well that none other than King Charles I visited with his Queen.

The Red Well was said to have fertility properties and as Charles wanted an heir to the thrown he came to the town with his consort. They went on to have 4 off-springs so it must have worked!

The Red Well is (just) visible today - if you know where you look that is! Most people I spoke to didn't even know that the Red Well actually existed let alone it's location!

I made the following video whilst there as well:

The rest of my photos can be seen here: Glamis Meadow and Wood

Wellingborough clearly has no interest in its history or in tourist attractions. Thanks for recording the well before it disappears in apathy, Fazza

It's such a shame that it's in the state it's in. Underneath all the brambles are all the bricks that used to form part of the well wall.

Infamous! I love it when there's a story behind what we find.

Do you know where the other four are/were?

To be honest I haven't even thought about researching/looking for the others.

The main reason I was at this location wasn't to find the well, but to go for a walk around the Glamis Meadow and Woodland and take plenty of photos to go on to a new website being launched at the end of the year for the Woodland Trust - the fact that it hides this fantastic piece of history was a bonus and I found it when I was trying to find a map of the woods on the internet and just had to try and find it!

Nice to see it's being looked after now, personally I would have liked to have seen it look more like one of the earlier photos as seen on your blog:

When I visited a lot of the bricks were lying around the place so I hope they have been saved and not discarded in a skip.
