Default Milestone & milepost, Caldon Canal...

..close to Cherry Eye Bridge are this original 18th centrury milestone along with a later milepost.

    Milestone

    From Listed Buildings Online:
"Milestone. c 1779 for Caldon Canal Co. Dressed /ashlar stone. Roughly triangular/ wedge shaped - rounded to top and approximately 60 cm high To the left it reads "1", to the right it reads "16".Dates to the first phase ofthe Caldon Canal before its extension to Uttoxeter."

I assume the "1" would be "1 mile to Froghall Wharf"

Hi, The cast iron mile marker in the photo I made at Newcast foundries in 1981 or 2, The photo is of the pattern which I took in May of this year at the Ellesmere port boat museum I made at least 6 or 7 of these, Mine have a capital E at the back of the post. I left Newcast in september 82 due to lack of orders and put on 2 days a week. I hope to think people will be looking at these well after i've gone, I hope someone can direct me to where the post is sited the last time I saw it was 30 od yrs ago, thank you.

    Nice work Eddie

This milepost is on the Caldon Canal about 1k from Boultons Works at Froghall (heading towards Consall) Hope that helps.

PS was there meant to be a pic of the pattern with your posting?

    Thanks for tha Eddie

This is one from the Trent & Mersey canal, but not sure when they were replaced. Would assume lots of the originals were "lost" over time

I don't know whether all the earlier metal posts that Eddie took his model from have gone, as I have not been there since, but here is a picture of one of the Caldon posts taken about May 1972, about two miles from the earlier reproduction shown . It had been painted completely white, and the canal was in a much worse condition then ! I have adjusted the photo to make it easier to read the wording
