Default Going to buy a digital camera

So,any suggestions as to what I should buy? Not really looking for a top of the range model,as long as it easy to use and I can get good results with it. And I'd prefer something compact as I travel light and by foot and public transport so carrying a large camera is not a good idea. Also the larger the camera the more obvious it is to a potential thief. The price isn't a stumbling block.

Now you've lost me! All I want is a camera I can point at what I want to photograph and then click on a button. Nothing fancy, just plain and simple.

    Canon IXUS950IS

I love it, I love it, I love it! Does exactly as it says on the tin...and came recommended to me too, so I am handing this mantle...this pearl of wisdom on.

Go SLR, more control and greater flexibility to be creative, you can make life as hard or as easy for yourself with one, but at least you've got the choice and less limitations

Okay,so I've decided which camera I'm going to get. The problem is - do I buy one here at a cost of around £330-340 or get one when I go over to the US in June at a much cheaper price? If I get one in the US how will I stand if it turns out to be faulty when I get it back over here?

I have bought loads of stuff from electrical stores from the U.S over the years and to be honest I have never experienced a problem.

Do be aware most manufacturer's will not support products purchased from other parts of the world. When I tried to update and register my Ixus online, it had a quick look at my camera firmware, saw it was U.S spec and would only let me register an American address !!!!! I had the same issue with a $250.00 Samsung mp3 player.....very annoying. You can get round it by blowing a European spec version of firmware....but this is not for the fainthearted
Most equipment including cameras have different names and software versions that will not be supported by your country of residence. I don't know why this is

That said, most stuff I have bought has worked as expected and I have not had to return it........which is very fortunate. Are you sure it works out any cheaper buying it in the U.S ? The way the pound has dropped against the dollar is frightening !!

    Good luck

P.S which camera have you decided on ?

A new camera...its exciting isn't it? Like hearing an announcement of a wedding or a new baby! For me anyway...

What have you decided on BereniceUK?

    Ditto Chedd.

Not much in the £/$ conversion these days and blowing firmware is a risky business.

I want a new camera now much better than news of a new born or wedding in IMHO.

But if that what floats yur boat Indy

So what did you choose in the end Berenice? We are all chaffing at the bit here
I will get that Canon IS USM F/2.8 400mm lens. Any donations accepted
