    Default Famous Canal Pubs closed

Over the past couple of weeks three of the best known canalside pubs in the country have closed for business.

The Admiral Nelson next to the Grand Union Canal at Braunston , near Daventry was probably the most well known canal pub anywhere having featured in many books about canal history as well as having been Canal Pub of the Year.

The Big Lock at Middlewich was well known to boaters heading north on the Trent & Mersey Canal .

Today has come the news that the popular pub The Romping Donkey at Hassel Green also on the Trent & Mersey Canal has also closed.

    Very Sad.

Unhappy Re: Famous Canal Pubs closed

It IS sad. I just hope that people have the forethought to keep these places locked down and secure (never thought I'd hear myself say that!) so that they can maybe be opened again when times get a litte better.

Bloody hell! I was up at Hassall Green recently and it was closed then but I assumed it was because it was a weekday lunchtime.

A bit of good news about the Admiral Nelson . According to the "towpath telegraph" (thats canal boaters terminology for the unofficial rumour and news spreading system amongst boat owners) there has been so much upset and indignation about the pub closing among canal enthusiasts that a new tenant has been found and it will reopen shortly. Mind you there has been a succession of tenants so it may not be for long as the rent is reported to be in excess of £1000 per week which will take some earning in todays economic climate.
