    the arrow is normaly a war department sign, there every where around where i live near the shoebury garrison. i have seen one on the side of an old 1920's church in southend, just an arrow.

    If there's a line above the tip of the arrow its a benchmark & the line is the datum for levelling off

    The plot thickens! I've seen loads and think I've got a picture of one on the Kendrick and Jefferson building in West Brom somewhere..

    Said benchmark on the side of our house




    Not sure of the height above mean sea level, but somewhere around 210m, but would originally been measured in good old imperial units.
    really ought to have a look on old maps
