There's a bench mark on the side of our house, its the "arrow" shape chisselled into the brickwork. Often wondered why its there, but possibly associated with a number of small mines that operated nearby as a colliery surveyor friend knew about it when we were buying the house.

the arrow is normaly a war department sign, there every where around where i live near the shoebury garrison. i have seen one on the side of an old 1920's church in southend, just an arrow.

If there's a line above the tip of the arrow its a benchmark & the line is the datum for levelling off

Said benchmark on the side of our house




Not sure of the height above mean sea level, but somewhere around 210m, but would originally been measured in good old imperial units.
