I wonder if its associated with Ordnance Survey - a datum point of some sort ?

Underground telephone cable-when telephones were run by The Post Office. But there should be numbers stamped on though/

It is for cable as Richie has said (shot, dude!) The 'feet and inches' would have been on a plate underneath - you can see the gap the plate was affixed into. The base plates were all cast identically, with just the distance plate changing.

It has to date from between 1910 and 1936 as that's when George V was king.

But it could have been under George VIlater on in 1936 until 1952....

Wonder if any royal insignia regarding Edward VIII (Jan-Dec 1936) were ever casted on anything like postboxes? Now there's a discovery thread! MidlandsHeritage to the nation's rescue!

its a bench mark, theres one on the side of our house, i was always le dto believe its 500 feet above sea level ????
