This is presumably one of these plastic mixes (often mixed with some form of starch), which decompose in the ground, and thus are supposedly more green-friendly. I would guess that if you kept them for too long they might also decompose on the shelf - thus ensuring the necessity of regular purchase, and an increase in income for the firm concerned

I suppose you could have tomato-free ketchup?
After all, you can get meat-free burgers.
