Exclamation Chillington Wharf canal - railway interchange basin

I absolutely love this! 1st read about it in a canal and waterways magazine, i believe it has some sort of listing status/ preservation order on it, there was no obvious way of getting in to it but you are so close to it from the canal bridge that you can almost touch it!

this is an expanded view showing the sheds next to it, pretty much all that is left of this part of the old works

anyway, I decided to see if there was a way in to it through substation 1070 next door....

    pass the air rifle!!

the first 3 signs were on the gate to s/s 1070 this one was on the side along the towpath...they really, really don't want you to go in here!!!

    substation 1070 -

Pauls too late!! but still, some nice shots of the side of the crane and sheds....

I took this as a no smoking sign!!!

follow the Bilston rd out of Wolves and there's a vauxhall I think it is, dealer on the left, just past this the road crosses over the canal. If you look left you can see it from the road, or alternatively do what i did and take the dog for a walk along the canal from Dunstall and take in the various places of interest along the way.....

Tom Foxon has since written another book in the canal series "The Industrial Canal" entitled "The Railway Interchange Trade" which details all the similar basins around Birmingham . There were around 140 basins or wharves used for this purpose and though there are remains of some still to be seen for example near Stourport and at Brownhills - Chillington is the best and most complete.
