Default Long Marston - Army Base Railway Sidings

Visited with Loaflife the other evening, couldnt gain access properly due to time of day visited, will visit properly one late evening.

This is used now for a dumping ground for old locos but in its day it was connected to the Royal Engineers Army Base which is now decommissioned and is a car auction site and now is awaiting development as the new eco town - as seen in the news "Middle Quinton"

Although there is a firm at Long Marston which refurbishes locomotives for export I think what your photos show is the base of the Stratford and Broadway Railway Preservation Society who have had their HQ there for about 12 years.
They do hold occasional open days for the public but is essentially a members only site.

Where you do get your info from, your knowledge is impeccable. I live 2 miles away and never knew that :-)

Lets just say I have been involved in transport preservation for an awefully long time , not quite as long as a friend suggested when he said he thought I may have helped build Stephenson's Rocket - but still a long time.

Yam, I think (but may be flamed) that this was a loco used by the British Transport Police for a high vis 'Stop kids playing on railways' initiative...but i could be wrong...it has been known!

It WASN'T the one in the famous 'HST caught speeding' BR advert from the eighties! That was a class 37 (had the nose like the other one) whereas this is a 47...sorry i'll get my anorak...

For amusement.... the ad is here

YouTube- British Railways Advert - HST v Class 37 Police Car!!
